Chanel: Calls for a Boycott?

Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld has been guest editing Paris’ free newspaper Metro, in which he recently called Adele ‘fat’.

He said: “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.

Controversy is nothing new for Chanel’s creative director, three years ago he branded critics “fat mummies”, and added: “No one wants to see round women,” but is calling Adele fat a step too far?

Adele’s debut album ’21’ has been certified platinum 14 times in the UK and has held the top position of any album in the US longer than any other artist since 1993. The album has earned her numerous mentions in the Guinness World Book of Records. Clearly Adele’s weight has made no impact on her success worldwide which only further highlights Lagerfeld’s comments.

As one of the fashion world’s most high profile figures, his remarks sparked fresh claims that the business discriminates against some body types and encourages women to crash diet to achieve unhealthy weights.

The comments have been heavily criticized worldwide. Curves and Chaos, an LA-based blog for full figured women, wrote: ‘Are you freaking kidding me? We’re done with him and Chanel as long as he’s involved with them.’ American PR guru Kelly Cutrone also added, ‘If you love Adele then boycott Chanel .’

Adele’s spokesman declined to comment on Lagerfeld’s remarks however in the past the star has insisted she is not obsessed with her fuller figure or trying to lose weight. She said last year, ‘I enjoy being me; I always have done. I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, you know, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I just don’t want that in my life.

I would think Chanel’s PR teams worldwide are hanging their heads and wondering what next from Lagerfeld, although as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad press but perhaps in this case, a boycott could really hurt this global brand.
